Longtime CBS News Radio Washington anchor as well as reporter Tom Foty died at the age of 77.
Tom Foty, known for his skills both in front of and behind the microphone, has a rich history full of notable achievements and participation in global events.
Born in Budapest, Tom Foty’s early life was influenced by his family’s displacement following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which led them to seek refuge in the United States. Growing up in New York City, Tom Foty pursued an interest in news at the City College of New York, where he took on the role of news director and general manager at the college radio station.
Early in his career, Tom Foty held positions at WINS, WOR, and worked as a stringer for NPR. He then made significant contributions to UPI and eventually rose to the position of executive editor of the radio network.
According to Tom Foty’s colleague Peter King, Tom Foty was a key figure for CBC News starting in 1998, covering everything from government affairs to international news.
King said of Tom Foty’s career trajectory- “He managed UPI’s Washington bureau, then he became its executive editor.”
King said-
“But he also parachuted into breaking stories like The Peoples Temple mass suicide in Guyana, and the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster.”
Foty is remembered by colleagues as a “super utility player,” reporting and anchoring whenever needed, with precision and grace.
“It’s impossible to count the ways we’ll miss him.”
