Sam Darnold is an American football quarterback. He plays for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL).
He played college football at the University of Southern California (USC) and was selected third overall by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft. At just 21 years old, he became the youngest starting quarterback on opening day in the NFL following the AFL–NFL merger.

USC defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, who recruited Darnold to the school, initially suggested he play linebacker, but Darnold declined. In the 2015 season, Darnold redshirted during his freshman year because Cody Kessler and Max Brown were ahead of him on the depth chart.
When the 2016 season began, redshirt freshman Darnold served as the second-string quarterback behind Max Brown. After a 1–2 start to the season, Brown was benched in favor of Darnold, who, in limited action as the backup quarterback, completed 14 of 22 passes for two touchdowns and one interception.
As a redshirt sophomore in the 2017 season, Darnold received early Heisman Trophy consideration and ultimately became a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The New York Jets selected Darnold in the first round, with the third overall selection, in the 2018 NFL Draft. On July 30, 2018, Sam Darnold signed a 4-year deal with the Jets worth $30.25 million, which included a fully guaranteed $20 million signing bonus.
