Conservatives Rally to Chip Roy’s Defense as Trump Labels Him a RINO

Former President Donald Trump’s recent attack on Texas Representative Chip Roy, labeling him a “Republican in name only” (RINO) and challenging him to a primary battle, has sparked a backlash from conservatives who came to Roy’s defense. Trump’s post on his Truth Social platform targeted Roy for appearing in Iowa with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, triggering a wave of responses from within the Republican ranks.

In the controversial post, Trump wrote, “Has any smart and energetic Republican in the Great State of Texas decided to run in the Primary against RINO Congressman Chip Roy. For the right person, he is very beatable. If interested, let me know!!”

Conservatives swiftly criticized Trump’s remarks, with DeSantis leading the charge. The Florida Governor voiced his support for Roy, emphasizing the latter’s commitment to securing the southern border, a key promise made by Trump during his presidency. DeSantis stated, “I stand with Chip and am honored to have his support. The time for talking is over. We must stop the invasion, and I will get it done.”

Other prominent conservatives also rallied behind Chip Roy. Representative Thomas Massie expressed his support, stating, “I stand with @chiproytx. He fights for what he believes, and he’s one of the most conservative members of Congress. I can tell you with certainty that this shortsighted effort to intimidate Chip will not work.”

Jim Pfaff, CEO of American Blockchain PAC, rejected Trump’s characterization of Roy as a RINO, describing him as an “American hero” and a “constitutionalist.” Conservative commentator Stephen Miller deemed Trump’s criticism “laughably insane” and emphasized Roy’s commitment to conservative values.

The tensions between Chip Roy and Donald Trump date back to the Texas representative’s vote against overturning the results of the 2020 election. Additionally, Roy backed Representative Elise Stefanik for the conference chair in 2021, a position Trump did not support him for. For the upcoming 2024 presidential elections, Roy has thrown his support behind Governor Ron DeSantis, positioning himself against Trump, who has expressed interest in running for president again.

As the conservative voices rise in defense of Chip Roy, the internal dynamics within the Republican Party continue to play out, showcasing the ongoing divisions and differing loyalties within the GOP. The episode also highlights the broader struggle for the soul of the party as it navigates post-Trump politics.
