Brief History of El Dorado Police Department:
The El Dorado Springs Police Department stretches back to the late 1800s when the town was founded. The term “town marshal” appears in early City Council minutes. Another reference to the “Night Watch” can be found when the task of looking for fires was added to the night tour of duty. The town marshal system was not eliminated until 1964 when the current police chief system was implemented. Ordinance Number 998, establishing a merit-based police agency, was unanimously passed by the City Council on January 6, 1964. This was a significant step towards establishing a professional police force.
