Maxi Jazz, the electronic band Faithless’s lead singer and the author of the classic dance song Insomnia, passed away at the age of 65. Along with Sister Bliss and Rollo, the musician and DJ, whose actual name was Maxwell Fraser, played an important role in the dance group. They released a number of successful songs together, including God is a DJ and We Come 1.
According to a statement on the singer’s Instagram, “We are devastated to report that Maxi Jazz passed away away softly at his home in south London yesterday night.” He was a man who, in a number of ways, significantly changed our lives. He provided our song the appropriate context and message. Additionally, he was a kind man who had time for everyone and a profound, approachable knowledge. Working with him has been an honour and a genuine joy. He was a gifted songwriter, a DJ, a Buddhist, an excellent theatre host, an automobile fanatic, an inexhaustible chatterbox, a kind person, a moral compass, and a genius. Since their formation in 1995, Faithless have put out seven studio albums, the most recent of which is All Blessed from 2020. They have also performed at some of the greatest festivals in the world, including the Pyramid Glastonbury internship in 2002, and issued a number of compilation CDs. They were nominated for a Brit Award in 1999 and 2002 for Best British Dance Act.
Jazz, who was raised in Brixton, was also the leader of the group Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys and released music under the Soul Food Cafe moniker. Working with musicians like Robbie Williams on the song My Culture by 1 Giant Leap helped him achieve success in his solo career.
Has Maxi Jazz’s cause of death been revealed?
Jazz passed away quietly while sleeping, according to Nurse Bliss, but the exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed. By posting a black and white image of himself on Twitter, he paid homage to the other band member.

Another tribute to Maxi Jazz
Jazz was also regarded as a “lovely guy” by the reggae group UB40, who recalled performing with him in 2017 with his group Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys. When meeting Jazz, radio DJ MistaJam, actual name Peter Dalton, remembers feeling like “the sweetest dude with such an aura.”

DJ David Pearce also reflected on how Faithless became an “iconic force in mid-90s British dance music, touching so many lives”, but during their rise to fame he felt that jazz had a “warm, cool, kind soul”. ‘ stayed and called him ‘the poet of dance music’.
Who is Maxi Jazz?
Maxi Jazz was born Maxwell Fraser in Brixton, South London. Jazz discovered hip-hop a year ago and founded the Soul Food Cafe System in 1984 as a DJ. From 1985 to 1986, he first broadcast his sounds as a DJ on pirate radio station Reach FM London under the title “In the Soul Kitchen with DJ Maxi Jazz.” In 1987, he transferred this sound to the pirate radio station LWR.
