Who is Gary Knafelc?
Knafelc was born on January 2, 1932, in Pueblo, Colorado, and went on to play college football at the University of Colorado in Boulder under head coach Dal Ward. Knafelc finally made his way to the Green Bay Packers, where he became a starter and a member of the Lombardi title teams that won two NFL championships during his tenure. In 1988, he was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. During his professional career, Gary Knafelc was a tight end for various clubs. The Chicago Cardinals drafted him in the 1954 NFL draught after graduating college. He subsequently played for the Green Bay Packers from 1956 to 1962 before finishing his career with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles from 1963 and 1965. During his seven years with the Packers, he was named All-Pro three times and appeared in five NFL championship games.

Knafelc’s influence is still felt today, both by fans who remember him warmly and by players who played alongside him. His record for longest reception held until 1997, when Antonio Freeman’s 95-yard touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings shattered it. The number 88 jersey he wore with the Packers has been retired since 1993 when Reggie White took over as honorary captain at Lambeau Field and wore it to honour Knafelc’s legacy within the team. Even after retiring from football, he worked as an assistant coach for Don Shula’s Baltimore Colts from 1966 to 1967 and then as an assistant personnel director for Vince Lombardi from 1969 to 1970.
