Shirley Rose Eikhard was a singer-songwriter from Canada. Eikhard was born in Sackville, New Brunswick. Her mother, June Eikhard, began her musical career with her husband, bassist Cecil Eikhard, who later passed away in the 1950s when both of her parents were members of a modest local band called the Trantramar Ramblers. Eikhard’s family relocated to Oshawa, Ontario, when she was in her twenties. She obtained her first guitar at the age of 11 and made her stage debut at the age of 12 at a fiddling festival in Cobourg, Ontario. Following her debut performance in Cobourg, Eikhard successfully auditioned for the Songwriter’s Workshop at the Toronto Mariposa Folk Festival.

Alannah Myles was the second musician to collaborate with her, and she featured “Kickstart My Heart” on her 1989 debut album. This followed her WEA Records album “Taking Charge” in 1987. Bonnie Raitt chose “Something to Talk About” as the first single from her album in 1991. The song had a lot of radio play in the 1990s. The song earned Raitt a Grammy for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance” in 1991, while the album earned Raitt a second Grammy. For “Something to Talk About,” Eikhard received a JUNO nomination for songwriter of the year in Canada and SOCAN Classics and BMI awards later in his career.
