In the company of his family and friends, former Liberal cabinet minister and Manitoban MP Jim Carr passed away on Monday. Age-wise, he was 71.
Jim Carr’s Professional Career:
Carr was elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for a four-year term as a representative for Fort Rouge in 1988. He was re-elected as a Liberal Member of the Legislature for Winnipeg South Centre in October 2015. He served in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet in various capacities, including minister of natural resources, minister of foreign trade diversification, and special envoy to the Prairies. He was fired from Trudeau’s cabinet in 2021, and at the time, he professed support for the leader’s choice.
His family said he “fought for Winnipeggers, Manitobans, and Canadians up until the very end of his magnificent life.” They cited Carr’s most recent accomplishment in the House of Commons, when his private member’s bill on establishing a green prairie economy was passed on December 8. “Jim was liked and respected by so many as a devoted elected politician, business, and community leader in Manitoba for over 30 years, and we know he will be greatly missed,” his family writes.

Former Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole complimented Carr on Twitter, calling him honourable and “very highly respected on both sides.”
