Peter Fowler, a native of London, Ontario, and regarded as an icon of sports medicine, died at age 84. Fowler died Wednesday from a respiratory infection at University Hospital. He had toiled and polished his surgical skills to rehabilitate wounded top and amateur athletes across Canada, something that would one day make his name in the history books.

Who is Dr. Peter Fowler?

The Governor General confers the Order of Canada on Peter John Fowler of London, Ontario, an orthopedic surgeon and leader in sports medicine. His treatments included utilizing arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting a tiny tube attached to a fiber-optic camera through an incision. The image of the inside of the joint is then relayed to a high-definition monitor, allowing the surgeon to repair the broken joint without making a big incision.

The Career of Peter Fowler:

As the first orthopedic surgical intern at Western University, Fowler worked to perfect the procedure under the tutelage of the late Dr. Jack Kennedy. Following his residency, Fowler and Kennedy founded a small athletic injury clinic that grew into one of North America’s most prominent sports medicine clinics: the Fowler Kennedy Medicine Clinic, in collaboration with the London Health Science Centre. Fowler received the Order of Canada in 2019 for his “pioneering” contributions to the advancement of sports medicine in Canada.

Tributes Paid To Dr. Peter Fowler:

“We are all feeling in the soul,” said Dr. Robert Litchfield, the clinic’s medical director, in a Facebook post. “It is impossible to express the breadth and significance of Dr. Fowler’s career.” He left an indelible mark on sports medicine, the medical community in London, Ontario, Canada, and across campus at Western University.”

Dr. Peter Fowler As president of the American Orthopaedic Society:

According to the clinic, Fowler voted president of the American Orthopaedic Society, “the most powerful society in this specialty.” He was one of just two Canadians to get this honor. Dr. Peter Fowler was the president of the Society of Arthroscopy and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the world’s largest and most influential sports medicine society.

Medical Community Universally perceived Dr. Peter Fowler:

Fowler was well-liked in the medical community. He was one of only two Canadians serving as the Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine president. He founded the International Society of Arthroscopy and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, the world’s largest organization. Padfield added that he mentored and instructed numerous surgeons who have carried his unique techniques.
