The House of the Dragon is currently on the verge of a civil war that would split the realm. Based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, the two sides of the shattered House Targaryen fighting for the Iron Throne are known as the Greens and the Blacks. This may be puzzling for people who haven’t studied the source material.
Blacks & Greens in House of the Dragon:
The Blacks are Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen’s close family relatives. Houses Velaryon, Arryn, and Stark also join them. Meanwhile, the Greens are made up of Alicent Hightower’s Targaryen family, as well as Houses Hightower, Lannister, and Baratheon. The Blacks and Greens are made up of houses and people depending on who they are loyal to. It’s also worth noting that in the Dance of the Dragons, allegiances shift depending on the situation.
Who Supports the Blacks and Rhaenyra?
The men of the realm who respect their honor and refuse to break their sworn pledges to protect and preserve Rhaenyra and Prince Jacaerys Velaryon will be on the Black side, fighting for their rights. Rhaenyra is the mother of three sons, Jacaerys ‘Jace’ Velaryon, Lucerys ‘Luke’ Velaryon, and Joffrey Velaryon, all of whom were fathered by Ser Harwin Strong before his untimely death. Daemon Targaryen, his family, and his daughters from Laena, Baela, and Rhaena, are also on her side. Prince Daemon, her fiercest rival for the throne, is now her most excellent ally and will greatly assist her in all future matters.
Lord Corlys With Blacks and Rhaenyra:
Lord Corlys chooses to side with Rhaenyra and her sons. He is still attempting to keep his family’s legacy alive, and without real children to carry on his name, he feels obligated to assist his ‘grandsons.’ With Daemon solidly on Rhaenyra’s side, the decision is made easier because the Blacks will also defend his grandchildren. House Velaryon delivers their complete fleet and wealth to Rhaenyra, making her nearly impossible to beat on the water. Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and Lord Corlys Velaryon are potent personalities in the kingdom, and Rhaenyra’s campaign needs their support, strategic planning ability, money, ships, and dragons.
Who Is on the Greens’ and Alicent’s Side?
On the Green side, he is fighting for King Aegon Targaryen’s rights and future heirs. Aegon’s mother, Queen Alicent, is his staunchest supporter, but his sister, Princess Helaena Targaryen, and his brother, Prince Aemond Targaryen, are also on his side. The Greens enjoy the backing of King Viserys’s small council’s most influential and prominent members. The King’s Hand, Ser Otto Hightower, is accompanied by the entire House Hightower, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Criston Cole. The new Lord of Harrenhal, Larys Strong, is standing with the Greens, and his discretion and readiness to do whatever is required will be important in the next conflict.
Who Is an Undeclared Character?
The remnants of King Viserys’ small council, Grand Maester Mellos, Master of Ships Ser Tyland Lannister, and Master of Coin Lord Lyman Beesbury, are still undeclared. These men and Lesser Houses of the Kingdoms will be called upon to make a decision soon. Promises of royal marriage and affluence will tempt some; others will be seduced by their loyalty, duty, and honor; and still, others will wish to remain neutral to avoid the terrible price this conflict would exact on all those involved.
