A pregnant 39-year-old NSW mother-of-three died unexpectedly, leaving her family heartbroken. She was expecting her next kid at the time of “the awful and sudden passing.” Megan Fisher is a Canadian-American Paralympic athlete born on March 1, 1983. At the Paralympic Games, she won one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal for Team USA. Fisher received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, in 2014.

Early Life of Megan Fisher:

Megan Fisher was only a child in the Calgary area of Alberta. She relocated to Hinsdale, Illinois, with her mother after her parents divorced and split her time with her father. During her first year, Fisher was a walk-on for the University of Montana’s NCAA Division 1 tennis team. On June 30, 2002, she drove with a friend back to school for their sophomore year when they were both injured in a car accident. Fisher’s left leg was severed after being rescued from the car by a witness; her buddy died due to her injuries. Fisher returned to the University of Montana less than a year after the accident and competed in a triathlon after undergoing second leg surgery.

Early Career of Megan Fisher:

Fisher met Paralympic rider Sam Kavanaugh, who encouraged her to start competing in para-cycling and eventually make the USA Paralympic squad. Fisher won the International Triathlon Union Paratriathlon World Championship in Budapest, Hungary, in 2010 and the 2010 USA Paratriathlon National Championship in the TRI-5 division. She was also the first woman with a lower-leg amputation to compete in an XTERRA off-road triathlon. Fisher began her doctorate in physical therapy studies at the University of Washington before leaving for the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She competed in London Paralympic cycling, winning gold and silver medals. Her gold medal came from the C4 time trial, and her silver medal came from the track pursuit.

Successful Career of Megan Fisher:

Fisher left Team USA following the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. She is now a pioneer in gravel and mountain bike events. She was the first Paracyclist to complete the challenging 200+ mile gravel event Unbound in 2019 and will defend her title in 2020. Fisher’s sporting interests have recently expanded to include mountaineering. In 2017 and 2019, I summited Cotopaxi in Ecuador as part of an elite team with The Range of Motion Project, a nonprofit that raises finances and supplies prostheses to needy individuals. Dr. Fisher works as a Doctor of Physical Therapy at Meg Fisher Physical Therapy & Coaching in Missoula, Montana. She is also a speaker and a bike coach.
