AMC’s zombie apocalypse series today revealed a sneak peek and a kind of launch date for its upcoming Lauren Cohan and Jeffery Dean Morgan-starring, New York City-based spinoff at New York Comic Con, just weeks before The Walking Dead reaches its series conclusion.

Fans of The Walking Dead were given a number of sneak peeks at The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will be produced and directed by Eli Jorné.

Dead City’s first season, which will consist of six episodes and premiere in April of next year, has been filming in adjacent New Jersey for the previous several weeks. The Dead City cast also includes Gaius Charles, a veteran of Friday Night Lights who was announced in April.

Spinoffs of The Walking Dead

After The Walking Dead ends on November 20 after 11 seasons, at least three spinoffs are planned, with Morgan’s once-villainous Negan and Cohan’s Maggie roaming the streets of the devastated city in Dead City.

There is little question that tensions exist between the two characters even in their new journey even if they have gotten more trusting of each other during the previous two seasons of TWD. Negan did, after all, murder Maggie’s husband Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) with a baseball bat in Season 7 of the comic book adaptation.

Another announcement of a spinoff series set in The Walking Dead, named Isle of the Dead, back in March of this year, well before the end of the original series was set to air. To cut a long tale short, it’s fair to say that the reveal of the rebranded spinoff diminished the stakes about who makes it through the end of The Walking Dead.
