On Monday, the city began accepting applications for a new program that will provide 660 dollars per month to eligible single parents and guardians. The Shreveport Universal Basic Income Program as it is known will start by adding a select group of 110 families in its year.  For the next 12 months, 110 eligible households in the city will get  660 dollars in monthly payments to be eligible, a municipal resident must be a single parent with a household income of 120 % of the federal poverty level. A single parent is defined as the mother, father, stepparent, grandparent, caretaker, or legal guardian school-aged child, according to the city. As of August 2021, the youngster must be at least three years old and under the age f twenty. In addition, the city said that you cannot live with a partner if you are not married.

However, the deadline to apply for the money is approaching and eligible families only have until Monday, January 12 to submit an application. The United Way Financial Empowerment Center is open until 3 p.m. Shreveport will hold two raffles as part of the selection process Following that, the participants will be assigned either a treatment intervention group or a control group. The intervention group will be paid on a regular basis.

 

The control group will not be paid, but they will be invited to participate in future study projects. The city notify selected participants within three weeks after the application is closed. Various cities across the country have embraced UBI. Shreveport is one among them. Many of these are putting UBI to the test with monies from the American Rescue Act to study how it affects low-income Americans.
