The Governor of New York Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency to prepare for the new coronavirus variant was designated as being a “variant of concern” and named it Omicron also known as B.1.1.529. It was first identified in South Africa.
Gov. Kathy Hochul States Against the New Variant “It’s Coming”
Gov. Kathy’s declaration on Friday is one of the first emergency steps taken by a state in the U.S. against the new variant, known as Omicron, whose discovery was announced last Thursday.
Dr. Anthony Fauci the nation’s top infectious disease expert release a statement in an interview Friday with CNN that there are no Omicron cases detected in America, though he acknowledged that it doesn’t rule out the possibility the variant could be in the country. In addition, the States are still in surveillance to spot the omicron in the country.
Hochul urges the New Yorkers to wear a mask all the time, get vaccinated, and get a booster shot to battle against the new Omicron. Moreover, scientists and medical professionals are researching to study the new strain by determining the current vaccines are still effective in preventing severe disease of the new variant. “We continue to see warning signs of spikes in COVID this winter, and while the new omicron variant has yet to be detected in New York State, it’s coming,” Hochul posted a tweet.
The U.S. has Already a Restricted Travel
America has already restricted travel from several nations in southern Africa to mitigate the spread of Omicron. Furthermore, the Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa but has been detected in several other countries, like Israel and Hong Kong.
The level of variation has led to concern regarding transmissibility, immune system evasion, and vaccine resistance. As a result, the Omicron variant led the Biden administration to declare travel restrictions as well as by several countries to limit or slow its international spread.
