40-Year-Old Woman, 2-Year-Old Son Die After Falling from the Third Floor of Petco Park

A tragic incident preceded the Padres game as a woman and her 2-year-old son on Saturday fell from the third level of Petco Park, resulting in their immediate deaths, just in time as thousands of baseball fans were heading inside, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The woman lost her balance but quickly regained her footing. She then fell in a matter of seconds. Both the woman and the child tipped over the side of the facility and dropped in a terrifying moment.

According to Lt. Andra Brown, the two dropped from the third-floor concourse – the height equivalent of six stories – to the sidewalk below Tony Gwynn Drive. The woman and the boy were pronounced dead at 4:11 p.m., around 20 minutes after the incident was reported to the police.

Meanwhile, their identities were not disclosed, but they both lived in San Diego. Prior to the fall, the mother and child were in a dining or concession area on the concourse level, according to Lt. Adam T. Sharki. The child’s father was at the ballpark at the time of their deaths, according to the authorities.

The Incident Was Under Investigation

The incident was still under investigation as of Sunday, with the San Diego Police Department saying in a news release that the deaths seemed to be suspicious and that the homicide unit had been called to the scene “out of an abundance of caution.” Homicide Lt. Andra Brown told the newspaper that police were inclined to speak with anyone who could have been there and witnessed the scene and could “give the family some peace.”

Bystanders Witnessed What Happened

Kathryn Benson-Billing, who was about 10 feet away from the mom and child when they fell, said she was extremely shocked by what she saw. She said she “still can’t figure out how precisely it happened” but added that the mother appeared to be in a good mood, hopping around and bouncing her toddler. She told authorities what she witnessed in the hopes of assisting their investigation.

A woman who did not want to be identified told a news outlet that she was walking across the Omni hotel footbridge leading to the ballpark when the incident occurred and did not notice the fall. But her spouse saw a woman and a child walk over “the side from the third floor of Petco” outside Section 316, she claimed.

The San Diego Padres said they were keeping their comments to a minimum of what happened because the incident is still under investigation.
