The 2013-14 academic year at Missouri State University will officially begin with New Student Convocation 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at JQH Arena. During the event, actor and alumnus John Goodman will receive an honorary Doctor of Public Affairs degree and will give the convocation address.
Now in its 20th year, New Student Convocation serves as the official welcome to campus for new students.
The event also introduces the annual public affairs theme, which this year is: “Global Perspective: Why It Matters.”
“The combination of our strong academic programs, exemplarily out-of-class support and engagement opportunities, and the focus on the public affairs theme makes MSU a special place of learning,” said Dr. Dee Siscoe, vice president for student affairs, in a press release. “I know that excitement will fill the air as the faculty, staff and students come together to kick off the new academic year.”
Goodman has distinguished himself by his contributions to the area of humanities and has continued his involvement with and support of Missouri State University by delivering public service announcements, donating to multiple scholarships, speaking to students and classes as a guest celebrity, joining the Tent Theatre 50 for 50th Club, and supporting both theater and athletic activities.
“I am personally looking forward to seeing all the new Bears -- new first-years and transfers -- as well as our returning Bears, at this important community event,” Siscoe said in the release. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the official start of the fall term then to participate in New Student Convocation and to see my fellow alumnus, John Goodman, receive an honorary Doctor of Public Affairs degree. What a treat for the Bear community.”
New Student Convocation, part of the public affairs signature series of events, is free and open to the public. The event will also be streamed live online.
Bear Path will immediately follow New Student Convocation. Faculty, staff and current students line the sidewalks from JQH Arena to the Plaster Student Union to cheer on new students as they start their college journey.
